95 km of roads to be re-laid in Tiruchi

TIRUCHI: About 95 kilometres of city roads would be built anew with drains under a Rs.24.30-crore project funded by German development bank KfW.

The Tiruchi Corporation Council on Thursday approved the tenders for 168 works to be executed under the project in 40 packages.

Mayor Sarubala R.Tondaiman informed an urgent meeting of the council that the works would begin shortly and the project would give a fillip to civic infrastructure. A consultant had been appointed. Commissioner T.T.Balsamy, responding to some suggestions from the councillors, said that the roads to be developed under the project would be laid end-to-end along with drains on both sides.

The Corporation would contribute 10 per cent of the total project cost, amounting to Rs.2.43 crore. KfW would provide a long-term credit of Rs.16.87 crore and Rs.5 crore as capital subsidy.

More major projects were on the anvil, she said. The Corporation had forwarded proposals worth over Rs.100 crore under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project (TURIP), Mrs.Tondaiman said and was hopeful of getting the funds soon.
