TIRUCHI: In a major spinoff benefit from the Rs.253.71-crore flood control project, a new link road would come up along the Koraiyur and Uyyakondan rivers, connecting the Tiruchi-Dindigul National Highway with Puthur, in the heart of the city.
The flood control project, which took off recently, envisages major improvements to the Uyyakondan, Kudamuritti, Ariyar, Koraiyur and Aiyyar rivers apart from strengthening the bunds of the Cauvery and Coleroon rivers in Tiruchi, Karur and Ariyalur districts.
The Public Works Department has decided to develop the bunds of Koraiyar and Uyyakondan as a pucca black-topped road, for a stretch of about 1.6 km. There is no direct road link across the Uyyakondan river to reach the Koraiyar bunds. To overcome the problem, a new bridge would be built across the Uyyakondan river, near the Puthur weir, PWD sources told The Hindu.
Retaining walls were also being built along the bunds of the river. The component would be executed at a cost of about Rs.7.70 crore. The new link road would help PWD officials in conducting inspections and carry out maintenance works. It would also fulfil one of the long pending demands of the locals.
Once of the road and bridge was in place, residents would have a direct and short access route from the Koraiyar river bridge near Dheeran Nagar on the Tiruchi-Dindigul National Highway up to the Uyyakondan river bridge near Puthur. For motorists travelling on the route, this would mean a saving of four to five km. The new road would also provide a shorter access to the Vayalur Road as the right bank of the Kudamuritti river would also be developed under the flood control project.
