A new building for the Tiruchi Sports Hostel, constructed with the financial assistance of State Government at the Anna Stadium complex, was inaugurated here on Sunday.
The hostel was established in 1981 with 45 boys. But the strength of the hostel grew over the years and the need for a separate building was felt. The new facility has five dormitories, separate dining hall, an office room and has been built at a cost of Rs.67 lakh. At present, more than 100 boys were being trained at the hostel in their respective disciplines – athletics, football, volleyball, hockey and boxing.
The boys have been performing consistently well at tournaments conducted at various levels. At the Commonwealth Youth Games last year, Nikhil Chittrarasu in high jump and B. Azarudeen in long jump bagged silver and bronze medals respectively. The Sports Hostel Warden P. Kalaiselvan attributed the success of the boys in various sports to the systematic training provided by the coaches. He also added that the boys, studying at the Khajamian Higher Secondary School, are good in academics as well.
