TIRUCHI: Underground cables would replace overhead power lines here over the next few years under a project funded by Rural Electrification Corporation (REC).
The Tiruchi Metro Circle of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has been sanctioned Rs.212 crore for the project. The funding from the REC will be by way of a loan.
The Tiruchi Metro Circle, which covers the Corporation limits, has already commenced the project in a small way by providing the power lines through underground cables for the Ramanathapuram Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme, for which water is being tapped from the Cauvery river at Mutharasanallur on the outskirts of the city. The new link, for about 6.4 km, has been provided through underground cables. The overhead power line to the Srirangam Drinking Water Supply Scheme has also been replaced with underground cables.
“Low tension (LT) underground cables will have to be laid for a distance of about 1,600 km in the city and high tension (HT) cables for about 180 km. We have prepared the estimates for the project which would cover about 7.88 LT and 160 HT consumers in the city,” K. Venkataraman, Superintending Engineer, TNEB, Metro Circle, Tiruchi, told The Hindu.Though the project is scheduled to be implemented over a five-year period, officials of the Metro Circle plan to complete it within two to three years. But this would depend on the availability of cables and the speed with which clearances are obtained.
