Greenery gives way for development

TIRUCHI: Even though the new look railway junction, the expanded Central Bus Stand the new Coleroon and Cauvery River bridges and the widened Chettipalam across river Uyyakondan have all contributed towards strengthening the infrastructure of Tiruchi, the environmental deprivation in the city is becoming all too apparent owing to the vanishing greenery.

Roadside parks play a key role in improving the beauty of any city. Bangalore is called the ‘Garden City’ for its delicate blossoms and greenery that impart a unique beauty. But Tiruchi lacks woefully in roadside gardens.

Many organisations like Exnora have been underscoring the need to develop roadside gardens as a part of the beautification programme. They argue that development with emphasis on greenery reduces the carbon-di-oxide content in the atmosphere and allows citizens to breathe pollution free air. Transformation to a green aesthetic delight will not only please Tiruchiites, but also bring joy to tourists and floating population, they say.

Unfortunately the city can boast of only a few roadside gardens and traffic islands with eye catching flower bearing trees. This is despite the availability of adequate space even in busy areas like Cantonment, Thillai Nagar, Bharathiar Road, Collector Office Road, Sastri Road, Ammamandapam Road, etc.

The Poompuhar showroom in Singarathope has set a worthy example for the government departments to follow by developing and maintaining a small beautiful roadside garden. The site where the garden stands at present was encroached upon by petty traders till a couple of years ago. The Corporation removed all the encroachments, which enabled the Poompuhar in developing this garden.

A few Central government departments have spared no efforts to contribute their might for the ecological balance. The Excise and Customs Department for instance, has converted a good part of its campus into a green zone. Tall grown trees, well maintained park, a variety of horticultural species are a scene of delight.

The Head Post Office campus is another classical example, where a well laid out garden is being maintained with maximum utilisation of available space for eco-friendly cause. The office of the Divisional Railway Manager too has a well laid out garden.

People feel that the banks of Uyyakondan River could be converted into roadside parks with walkways. Eye-sore points, encroachment vulnerable points, open - air urinal nuisance points and waste stretches should be identified and roadside parks developed. If the gardens are maintained properly throughout the year not only will the areas be pleasing to the eye but a number of persons can also be provided with employment.

The Corporation can play a major role in developing roadside gardens. It can rope in commercial banks, business establishments, educational institutions, companies involved in the promotion of apartments, hospitals, government departments and public sector undertakings in developing and maintaining gardens in their premises, says S. Natesan of Edamalaipattipudur, a private concern employee. Even little space is enough for developing a small garden, he says.

People also want avenue tree planting in an extensive manner on important roads, besides developing gardens in all the traffic islands and also greening of the traffic central medians.

Except the traffic islands at Khadi Craft junction and Aristo Hotel Junction, the other traffic islands are bereft of gardens. Steps should be taken for the maintenance of gardens even in the small traffic islands, says S. Gopalakrishnan, proprietor of Agasthiar Publications.
