Tiruchi Mayor to be elected on June 3

TIRUCHI: Indirect election for the post of the Mayor of Tiruchi, consequent to the resignation of Sarubala R.Tondaiman, is to be held on June 3, according to Corporation Commissioner T. T. Balsamy.

The two-time Congress Mayor Sarubala R.Tondaiman resigned after she was nominated the party candidate for the Tiruchi constituency in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhagan of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has been holding charge since.

The Corporation Council meeting would be held at 9.30 a.m. on June 3 to elect the new Mayor from among the councillors, Mr. Balsamy said.

The DMK commands a majority in the 60-member council with 26 councillors.

The Opposition AIADMK has 10 members, while the Congress has eight, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam four, the Communist Party of India three, the CPI (M) two, and the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam one.

There are five Independents in the council.

The Congress was allotted the Tiruchi Mayor’s post under the seat sharing arrangement in the DMK-led alliance in the 2006 local body elections.
