Tension gripped Goripalayam in the heart of Trichy on Monday after a statue of the late All-India Forward Bloc leader U Muthuramalinga Thevar, deified by the Thevar community, was found vandalised.
Protesting the incident, members of the community stoned and damaged several buses across the caste-sensitive region, which has a sizeable Thevar (most backward caste) population.
