Air show in Tiruchi next month

TIRUCHI: Suryakiran, the aerobatic team of the Indian Air Force, will stage an air show at the Tiruchi airport on January 21.

The team, based at Bidar in Karnataka, will perform here for the first time. The show, originally planned in February this year, was postponed due to administrative reasons.

A fleet of nine Surya Kiran aircraft will take part in the 45-minute show which will feature the team’s standard formation and manoeuvres such as loops and barrel roll. There may be minor changes, depending on the weather condition. The event will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.. About 20 officers and 60 Air Force men would participate in the show.

Officials of the district administration and airport authorities have started the groundwork. On Thursday, Collector T. Soundiah held a consultative meeting with Group Captain S.S. Kothari, Station Commander, Air Force Station, Thanjavur, officials of the Tiruchi airport and various government agencies to discuss the arrangements to be made.

A temporary enclosure will be established close to the airport for the people to view the event.

The police, the Fire and Rescue Services, medical services and the Corporation, besides the Airports Authority of India, are involved in the preparations.

Mr. Soundiah said the district administration was expecting a turnout of about two lakh persons from Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Pudukottai and Ariyalur districts for the free show. All arrangements have to be made accordingly, he instructed the officials.

Group Captain Kothari, when contacted, said that the air show was intended to motivate more youth to join the Air Force. District Revenue Officer V.Dakshinamurthy, Deputy Commissioners of Police S.Rajendran (Law and Order) and Rupesh Kumar Meena (Crime and Traffic), Airport Controller S.Dharmaraj, Dean of the K.A.P.Viswanatham Government Medical College N.Balasubramanian and other officials attended the meeting.
