Cold storage for two markets soon

TIRUCHI: The two Uzhavar Sandhais at Anna Nagar and K.K.Nagar in the city will get cold storages soon.

Each cold storage is being put up at a cost of Rs.6.50 lakh and can accommodate about two tonnes of vegetables. Racks and crates would be provided to the farmers.

Construction of storage rooms, each in about 200 square feet, and erection of refrigeration systems are under way.

They are expected to be opened in the next few days. The cold storages will come as a boon for farmers.

Very often, when arrivals are heavy and demand is low, the farmers are forced to sell their produce at throwaway prices. They can now keep their unsold produce at the cold storages free of cost.

According to Agriculture Marketing officials, the government is establishing storages at 22 sandhais, which have been recording huge vegetable arrivals.
